The second round of games in the Munro Cup saw Barry Romilly’s A side welcome Belle Vue from Penarth in a game in which the Romilly side proved much too strong for their opponents. Romilly won on all four rinks to win the aggregate by 93 shots to 39. Top rink of the night was that skipped by Dave Francis with Jerry Daly, Phil Herbert and Jeff Wyatt in support, scoring more than a third of their teams score with their 32-10 victory over on rink 4.

Meanwhile the Club side’s match away to Barry Athletic proved to be an altogether proposition, with each side winning two rinks each. On rink 1 Fossy’s quartet raced into an early lead, and with the score at 12-2 by the 7th end it looked like plain sailing for the team from The Rom. However, the Athletic four rallied and at 13-17 by the 14th end, it looked like they might make a fight of it, only for Ben Curtis, Stuart Simpson, Kevin Mahoney and Fossy to stem the tide and win the rink by 20 shots to 15.

Romilly’s other win came on Jeff Wright’s where, having exchanged the lead with the Athletic in the early stages of the game, they fell behind until the last two ends when they picked up six shots to turn the game from being 15-13 down to an excellent victory 19 shots to 13.

Unfortunately, things didn’t go as well for the Rom on the other two rinks. Griffo’s rink went down 18 shots to 15. Rob Grant’s rink was also finding life difficult against the Athletic rink skipped by Martin Clark. They were 10 shots down going into the 17th end when the two skips produced a couple of marvellous shots. With the Athletic holding one Rob took the jack into the ditch to give the Rom a four-shot advantage. The Athletic skip responded by reaching the ditch just above the jack to retrieve a one- shot advantage. Then with his final bowl, Rob played his shot with weight to turn Martin’s bowl into the ditch and so claim a four-shot lead on the end for the Rom. Sadly, it was a case of too little, too late, and the Athletic finally took the rink 21-14.

It was a typically close game between The Rom and their local rivals, Barry Athletic, with the home side winning the aggregate 69-68, to pull off a 10-4 points victory. So, with two games played in the Munro Cup, the Club side has 20 points and the A side 24 points.
