The Club side played their first game of the season away at Guest Memorial in Merthyr, winning two of the four rinks. The honour of top rink of the day has to go to the rink skipped by The Rom’s youngest player, Rob Grant who, accompanied by John Seaford, Dave Curtis and the imperious Kevin Mahoney inflicted a 32-11 defeat on their opponents. The game went down to the wire, and was only won when Mike Doyle bowled the final bowl of the day to ensure his rink won by shots, and so win the aggregate by 80-79, and so ensure a 10-4 points victory for Barry Romilly.
There was no league game for the The Rom’s Club side this week as they played Dinas Powys at The Rom in the preliminary round of this season’s Carruthers Cup. In what was expected to be a close game, Barry Romilly proved to be too strong for their visitors, winning on three of the four rinks. There were close victories on the rinks skipped by Griffo and Mike Doyle, and a similarly close game on Jeff Wright’s rink, which the Dinas Powys quartet won. However, it was on the rink skipped by Rob Grant that the real damage was done, with team captain John Seaford, Dave Curtis and Kevin Mahoney all excelling to give them a 26-7 victory, and so ensure that the overall aggregate went in The Rom’s favour by 82 shots to 60. With this win Barry Romilly now go into the first-round proper next week, when they entertain Barry Central.
