Another great year for The Rom

Last season the Romilly Club side, led by Clive Collins, showed great determination to stave off relegation, fighting successfully to stay in Division Two. Meanwhile, the club’s A side were victorious in Division Six and gained promotion to Division Five under the leadership of Steve Bell. With all this in mind the 2025 season was always going to be an exciting and challenging one, and so it proved.

The Club side, now captained by John Seaford, faced a difficult start to the season, and recorded only two wins by the end of July. Relegation was a serious worry, but the second half of the season saw the team re-galvanised and finish the campaign with four victories from their last five games, including a series of 12-2 victories against Ely Valley, Dinas Powys and Penylan A, a run of form that elevated the team to third place by the end of the season. Captain John Seaford and his team deserve huge credit and congratulations for the way they turned their season around.

Following their promotion to Division Five, the Romilly A side knew they’d have a battle on their hands to remain in the division given that three teams were scheduled to be relegated at the end of the year. In the early part of the season the A side found it difficult to adjust to the superior standard of the opposition and, despite pulling off a couple of victories, suffered some heavy, confidence-sapping defeats in the early exchanges. However, as the season progressed captain Steve Bell rallied the troops to win five of their last seven games, including a notable 10-4 victory against eventual League 5 champions, Millwood. It was an incredible end to the season for Romilly A side who, like the Club side, finished third in their division.

This season the midweek competition, the Munro Cup, was to prove especially challenging for Romilly given that, as a result of the A side’s promotion from Division Two last year, both Romilly’s Club side and A side found themselves in Division One. This was to pose serious selection problems for the respective captains, Steve Bell and Peter Hunt, but once these issues had been resolved both sides proceeded to have excellent seasons in the mid-week competition. The Club side ended the season as champions with 164 points, losing only one game to eventual runners-up Barry Athletic, while Romilly A won seven out of their fourteen games, to finish a very creditable fourth in the league.

The Rom also won the Hugh Meddins Trophy, a competition played by a pair of triples rinks, defeating Dinas Powys in the final.
