This year 54 members and friends from Barry Romilly Bowling Club made their annual pilgrimage down to The Derwent Hotel in Torquay for a week of indoor bowls and entertainment. Over the course of the week The Rom played matches against 3 teams, Fry’s and Rosie’s Rollers, both from the Bristol area, and Brinton who had travelled down from Kidderminster.

Of the 24 rinks played, The Rom won 17, drew 1 and lost only 6, scoring a total of 349 shots against 217 for the opposition, giving The Rom an overall lead of 132 shots. All but one of The Rom’s 8 teams ended the week with a shot profit with the rinks skipped by Steve Bell, Stuart Simpson and Fossy winning all three of their matches. The best shot count of the week came from Angie Gray’s rink (with Paul Gray, Joan Walden and Leah Jenkins-Trask) beating Fry’s 32-1.

However, top rink of the week was Fossy’s (with Leigh Cogbill, Paul Rebane and Mike Simmonds) scoring 55 shots to 20 with a shot profit of +35.

All in all it was an exceptional week and in addition to the bowls great fun was had by all.

Many, many thanks to Mary Bloomfield for her tireless efforts in organising this trip for The Rom. Thanks as well to Mike Doyle for arranging the teams, and to Steve Bell for deputising for Mike in his absence. Roll on 2027.
